Western Governors University

Western Governors University (WGU) is a private, nonprofit, was founded by 19 US governors in 1997 after the idea was formulated at the 1995 meeting of the Western Governors Association, online American university based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The university uses a competency-based learning model, students work online. Robert Mendenhall is president of the university at this time. Accreditation is through the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

As a private, nonprofit university, WGU governed by a supervisory board consisting of state governors, educators, and business and industry leaders. In May 2009, WGU nursing education program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Initial accreditation, which has a term of five years, was awarded following the process included site visits and review WGU nursing curriculum. In 2011, this WGU B.S. Health Informatics degree received accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Accreditation is given after extensive review by industry-developed standards. WGU is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Regional accreditation is by NWCCU, the regional accreditor other schools such as the University of Washington, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Gonzaga University, and the University of Oregon, among others. In recent years, WGU has the nation's top producer, in terms of the number of graduates licensing, science and mathematics teachers. WGU has also received the 21st Century Award for Best Practices in Distance Learning Education Association of the United States several years running, among many others recognition.
